I loaded up my front page of this site today and found it full of fetishes, over sexualized versions of children's cartoon characters, and photoshops of celebrities into fetishes. What the hell has happened to this site? When I created an account about seven years ago, with the intentions just to collect some nice artwork and maybe find ways to teach myself some day, there was some good quality artwork always on the front page, with good standards. I do remember some fuss a while ago now, about how the method of the order in which art is displayed on the front page was changed to push less recognized artist's work further up, people said it would reduce the quality of what we all saw, I thought it was a good way to get new artists work put out there. I see now how that has gone wrong if any of that is true.
I don't have any work in my gallery as of writing this, so my opinion probably isn't much, but I just don't think of DeviantArt as a good platform for a professional portfolio or such. Maybe the site is supposed to be just for casual art, as a hobby mainly, and the forums can still be a good place to find help or learn some things, and granted you can get into debating about what is art, but come on. I'm currently studying to become a Games Artist/Designer, and I'm probably going to put my portfolio elsewhere, ArtStation is a good alternative. Maybe I'll just post fanart and any practice works here.
I suppose I should say in all honesty as well, there are still some great works available for viewing here, since I have been recently updating my favorites collection, great artists are still here, just maybe harder to find.
